Space Heater 101

It’s the time of year when many people have to start turning up their heat, and bringing out their space heaters. This is also the time of year when the amount of calls about home and business fires goes drastically up. Many times these fires are caused by improper use or a faulty heater.

Here are some safety tips when it comes to these handy heaters:

• Always check and make sure the heater is not too close to anything flammable
• Keep heaters away from children or pets
• Do not use an oven or stove as a means to heat your home
• Check to see if your heater has a setting where it turns off when tipped over
• Make sure they are always on a level surface
• Never place them in doorways. This can cause accidents!
• Test batteries in detectors regularly
• Create an escape route and meeting place

And last,

NEVER LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED OR ON OVERNIGHT!
