With the holiday season in full swing, everyone is getting excited and ready! While this is a wonderful time of year, this is also the time of year when SERVPRO of Daviess County, Kentucky will begin receiving calls regarding holiday related accidents. State Farm provided some great tips on how to make sure this is not you this holiday season.

Cooking and Dining- When cooking during the holiday season, at times there are several people helping at once. The key to keeping everyone safe is to always have an adult in the kitchen to keep an eye on any heat sources that could catch on fire. Another best practice to keep small children and pets occupied in another room while cooking. You should also keep flammable items away from the stove or any other heat source that may be in the kitchen.

Preventing Foodborne Illnesses- While hand washing is always encouraged, washing your hands often is even more important these days. It is especially important while preparing food. Keep uncooked and cooked food separated to prevent cross contamination. Before serving food, check the temperature of to prevent undercooking. A general rule of thumb is anything should hit at least 140 degrees internally before eating. After preparing and food should only be at room temperature for two hours.

Shopping- When shopping in public this holiday season, make sure to constantly maintain a 6 foot distance and wear a clean mask. Another great idea is to only park in well-lit areas and store your purchases in your trunk or out of sight. It is also a good idea to only take a small bag while shopping, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Traveling- When traveling, do not drive tired or angry. Also, if it is icy or snowy, leave extra room between cars. If you are going anywhere where you will be consuming alcohol, make sure to have a plan on how to get home safely, whether that be a designated driver or Uber/cab ride home.

Decorating- When putting lights on your home, make sure to use the proper ladder to get the job done, your safety is the #1 priority. Also, do not use any other furniture or items that are not intended for climbing on. If there are any children in the home, take care to keep sharp, glass or other breakable items up high. Before plugging in any cords, check for exposed or frayed wires. If you find any, toss and replace immediately. Using these wires could result in a fire. If using a real tree, once has gone dry, remove from the home immediately. A dry tree is a major fire hazard.
